Back-to-School Safety Reminder for Blackstone Residents
As the school year begins, Blackstone Parkway becomes a busier, more hazardous place for students, parents, and drivers alike. With a school located directly on this major thoroughfare, it’s more important than ever to slow down, stay alert, and help ensure the safety of all our residents, especially our youngest ones.
Slow Down in School Zones
Speed limits in school zones are typically reduced during pickup and drop-off hours. Please observe posted signs and be extra cautious between 7:00–9:00 AM and 2:00–4:00 PM. Even if you're running late or in a hurry, a few seconds saved aren't worth the risk.
Yield to Crossing Guards and Pedestrians
Crossing guards are there for your protection and the children's safety. Yield promptly, avoid distractions, and never drive around a stopped school bus or a guard with a raised stop sign.
No Distractions Behind the Wheel
Put the phone down. Texting or adjusting music while driving, even for just a few second can lead to tragedy, especially near crosswalks or while turning onto Blackstone Parkway.
Watch for Kids Walking or Biking
Students often cross mid-block or ride bikes unpredictably. Keep an eye out near corners, driveways, and along sidewalks, especially where visibility is limited by landscaping or parked cars.
School Bus Etiquette
Flashing yellow lights mean the bus is slowing down, get ready to stop.
Flashing red lights mean STOP. All vehicles must come to a complete stop until the bus resumes motion and the lights turn off.
This applies in both directions unless a physical median divides the road.
Remind Guests and Contractors
If you have visitors, family, or service providers coming to the neighborhood, let them know about school traffic times and the need for extra caution along Blackstone Parkway.
Let's Keep Our Community Safe
Whether you’re walking the dog, driving to work, or simply stepping out to get the mail, be mindful that hundreds of children and parents use our streets daily. A little extra patience goes a long way.
Have a safe and successful school year,
Your Blackstone PTSS Committee
