A Message from the Landscape Committee

It’s time to follow up with the Blackstone community regarding a common issue many of us have experienced: sticky sap from Crape Myrtle trees coating sidewalks and lawn areas. This sticky mess is caused by aphid infestations, which draws sap from the trees and leaves behind residue. If you’ve ever walked across a sidewalk that feels as though it’s been covered in honey, you know exactly what we’re talking about. Fortunately, there’s a simple solution. Several effective treatments are available, both liquid sprays and granular, systemic options. These treatments only need to be applied once and will protect the trees for the season. Below is a partial list of manufacturers and insecticides that may be helpful. We hope this information makes it easier to choose the right product and keep our sidewalks clear and enjoyable.

  1. Manufactured by Bio-Advanced; 12 month Tree and Shrub Protection and Feed. Follow the instructions for application and results can be seen in as little as one week. This treatment is effective for 12 months. What also makes this insecticide better, for me at least, is the formula also includes a mild fertilizer. So the users gets two things at once.

  2. Manufactured by Earths Alley; Insect Control. This is a general insecticide that also treats mosquitos, ants, and aphid. No fertilizer benefits, but a broader insect treatment.

  3. Manufactured by Bio-Advanced Systemic Granular. A granular that is applied by spreading then watering into the soil.

  4. Manufactured by Byer; Tree and Shrub Protection and Feed. I used this several times and it is very effective. Follow the instructions for application and results can be seen in as little as one week. This treatment is effective for 12 months. What also makes this insecticide better, for me at least, is the formula also includes a mild fertilizer. So the users gets two things at once.

  5. Sevin: A general broad base insecticide for killing more than aphid. May need to make multiple application to control aphid. (Aphid multiple and return within weeks)

  6. There are many more manufacturers of aphid killers, consult your local nursery for additional information. I have used personally #4 liquid and really enjoyed the results, very satisfying.

Things to think about before applying are:

  1. How long will it take to dry or assimilate into the soil before it is safe to be around?

  2. Are there any eatable fruit of vegetables nearby? Over spraying can contaminate vegetables.

  3. Are children going to be playing in the impacted area? If so how long do they have to wait until it is safe for them?

  4. AND, How long do I have to wait until dogs can safely walk on the surface?

As stated before, I have used the aphid killer by Byer, liquid form, and really enjoyed the results. It was fast, efficient, easy to apply and a very short time until the surface was safe again for children and dogs. I just get a good bucket, pour in the designated insecticide amount, add the designated water, and then apply to the root zone around the infected tree or trees. As in ANY insecticide, always, ALWAYS, read and follow the instructions.

Thank you for your time and interest.
